April 26, 1922, - Death Comes in 94th Year - Mrs. Rowena Whitcomb of
Melrose, Florida, Formerly of Boylston, Was Granddaughter of Revolution.
Word was recieved in Boylston today of the death of Rowena Whitcomb, in
Melrose, Fla., Friday. She sustained a fall Dec. 26. No bones were broken
but the nervous shock was such that she was confined to her bed until her
death. She was buried Saturday beside her son, Oscar, in Melrose.
Mrs. Whitcomb was a former resident of Boylston. She was a real
granddaughter of the Revolutionary War, as her grandfather, James Longley,
one of the pioneer settlers of Boylston, served both in the land and sea forces
and was at the battle of Saratoga. She was the daughter of Betsey
[Longley] and Daniel Barnes, and was born in Berlin, Oct. 21, 1828.
Her husband, Charles L. Whitcomb, died in Boylston many years ago. They had
six children. The only surviving ones are Fannie M. and Mary G. Whitcomb,
who lived with her. Her oldest daughter, Anna, became the wife of ex-Major
Charles G. Reed of Worcester. Miss Nellie Whitcomb, a former Boylston
teacher, became the wife of Dr. William Bigelow, of Boylston, later of
Pennsylvania.
There are several grandchildren, children of the dauthter, Mrs. Bigelow,
and the son, Oscar Whitcomb. Her sister, Mrs. Asenath M. Bartlett, who lived
in Boylston many years, now lives in West Boylston, and her brother, David

Humor
From Bill Dupuis, BHS Museum Curator - provtrufle@aol.com

There are many stories related to the sinking of the "Titanic". Some have
just come to light due to the success of the recent movie. For example,
most people don't know that back in 1912 Hellman's mayonnaise was
manufactured in England. The "Titanic" was carrying
12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico,
which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after New York City.
The Mexican people were eagerly awaiting delivery and were disconsolate at
the loss. So much so that they declared a national day of mourning which they
still observe today. It is known as Sinko de Mayo.
