What's in a name ?
For those of you who are not members of BHS and don't receive the
snailmail newsletter, it is called The Potpourri. Sooooo, we thought the
appropriate name for this version would be PotpourrEMAIL. This email
version is not meant to repeat or copy the snailmail version, but to
complement it, with the addition of topics of interest to those with
computer and web capabilities.

Story Time with Norm -
Hi! I'm Norman Houghton French, a 71 year old native of Boylston and
descendent of Captain Robert Andrews (4th great grandson). Capt. Andrews
was a wealthy farm owner and so at the time of the Revolutionary War he was
elected captain of the Boylston Militia. I remember my grandmother telling
me what her father, John T. Andrews told her on his death bed in 1901. He
said that the state would NEVER fill up the water basin (Wachusetts
Reservoir) under construction !
I am a consummate town volunteer having just completed 28 years on the
Boylston Historical Commission.

Oral History
by Judy Haynes
What is it? How can I use it in my research? In future issues I plan to
address the topic of oral history and we invite you to send your questions
to our e-mail address and to give us your thoughts of what oral history
means to you. Let's hear from you.

BHS NEWS -
Gough Day , on May 2, was a great success! We had about 100 visitors to
the Gough House and 50 to the Museum---for a town of only about 3,500
people---that's really good!!! We continue to receive and will accept at
any time donations to the Gough Fund, for the renovation of the Gough
House. For more info on John B.
Gough and his estate Hillside go here:
http://www.ultranet.com/~boyhisoc/gough.htm
Programs and events for next year are just about settled--there will be
some genealogy programs in the spring--more about programs next month.
Fred Brown and Betty Thomas are working on transcribing the index to the
Boylston Historical Series and putting them on the web site.
Boylston Historical Society now has seven staff members--5 are "full
time"and 2 "part time." We have no "paid staff." We are all volunteers.
If you are free on Tuesday and /or Thursday mornings and would like to
become a staff member or just help out , please drop by or email us.

Boylston Genealogy Queries--
Put your Boylston Query Here!
Three Boylston mysteries from Fred Brown:
send info to: "Frederick Brown"
1) What was the final fate of Lucy Keyes - lost child of Wachusett Mountain?
2) Who was the murdered woman whose skeletal remains were found under the
granite stoop of a Boylston home in the early 1800's?
3) There is a question about the exact location of Tory Cave. Where is it
located?

On The Web--
A new genealogy search site from the LDS church!
http://www.familysearch.org/
It's getting very heavy use right now and so very often when you try to go
to the site you get an error message that the server is busy. Try off peak
hours. It is worth the hassle, it's a very nice site!
Marilyn Labbe was poking around in an attic and found a "stash" of old
newspapers. She has been transcribing them and posting them to several
email lists. They now can also be found at this web site!
